History
The pub was apparently named after a Lord Eldon, possibly the prime minister of the time, possibly a local drunken aristocrat, possibly one of Wellington's generals. It's name was changed around a century ago from The Crystal Palace. It is around 150 years old, and has enjoyed a colourful past.
The Eldon was maintained for nearly 20 years by a couple who are often fondly reminisced about. There are tales of its great jukebox, bar billiards, husbands meeting their wives-to-be and general good times. It has always been partial to a convivial atmosphere, it seems.
In recent years it has had various different owners who maintained its friendly atmosphere in its incarnations as a local's pub, a gay pub, a punk pub, a lecturer's pub, at another time a student pub, and later a live music venue. It's said that it's often been the perfect tucked away spot for musicians to come together to play, and there has been some name-dropping in the telling of these tales...
The pub is close to Clifton Village and Park Street, but is surrounded by eccentric older streets and buildings, including the old alms houses and the QEH school building opposite. Brandon Hill park and nature reserve are within easy walking distance and offer a fresh breezy stroll to walk off your dinner, as well as a stunning view of the countryside around bristol from the top of the hill.
